Early life and noble status
Born around 1304 in Sweden as Birgitta Birgersdotter, Saint Bridget belonged to the nobility and was known outside her homeland as the Princess of Nericia. From her earliest years she lived in the context of Swedish courtly life while already showing signs of a deep spiritual sensitivity that would mark her entire existence.
Mystical call and family life
Saint Bridget embraced both mystical vocation and family responsibilities, becoming the mother of Catherine of Vadstena. Throughout her adult life she balanced the duties of motherhood with an intense interior call, remaining a model of holiness within the domestic sphere while receiving the graces that would later shape her public mission.
Foundation of the Bridgettines
Moved by divine inspiration, Saint Bridget founded the Bridgettines, the Order of the Most Holy Saviour (OSsS). This new religious family was established to promote a life of prayer, contemplation, and apostolic service, and it quickly attracted followers who embraced its distinctive rule.
Later years and death
In her later years Saint Bridget continued her work of spiritual guidance until her death on 23 July 1373. She passed from this life having completed the principal tasks entrusted to her, leaving behind a flourishing community and a reputation for sanctity.
Legacy and patronage
After her death Saint Bridget was recognized as the foundress of the Bridgettines and as the mother of Saint Catherine of Vadstena. The Church has honored her as one of the six patron saints of Europe alongside Benedict of Nursia, Cyril and Methodius, Catherine of Siena, and Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, a title that reflects her enduring influence across the continent.
