Sažetak

Saint Alphonsus Mary Liguori (1696–1787), noble Neapolitan lawyer turned priest, founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer to evangelize the abandoned rural poor and became a master of compassionate moral theology. Ordained in 1726, he preached and confessed among Naples' poor, established evening chapels and the Redemptoristines, and served zealously as Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti before resigning in illness. A prolific spiritual writer whose works include The Glories of Mary and The Way of the Cross, he died at Nocera dei Pagani on 1 August 1787, was canonized in 1839, declared Doctor of the Church in 1871, and named patron of confessors and moralists.

Život

Noble birth and prodigious legal career in Naples

Saint Alphonsus Mary Liguori was born in Naples on 27 September 1696, the first of eight children of a noble family. He received an elite education from private tutors and showed extraordinary intellectual gifts from childhood. At about the age of twelve he passed a university entrance examination in law before the philosopher Giambattista Vico; by sixteen he was already practicing as a brilliant and successful advocate. For roughly eight years he won cases in the Neapolitan courts, yet the prestige and promise of a legal career could not satisfy the deeper call stirring within him.

Conversion of life and ordination

In time Alphonsus abandoned the bar entirely and prepared for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1726 and at once joined the diocesan Congregation of Apostolic Missions. From the beginning of his priestly life he devoted himself with singular intensity to preaching and hearing confessions among the poor of eighteenth-century Naples, seeking out those whom others overlooked and offering them the mercy of the Gospel.

Missionary zeal among the Neapolitan poor

His missionary zeal among the Neapolitan poor soon extended beyond the city. He had once volunteered in a hospital and had even dreamed of missionary work in the East, yet the concrete needs of his own people claimed him. Around 1730 an encounter with neglected shepherds in the mountains above Amalfi confirmed his vocation to evangelize the abandoned rural poor. Simple folk who had little access to regular pastoral care became the special object of his charity and preaching.

Encounter above Amalfi and founding of the Redemptorists

In 1732, under the guidance of Bishop Tommaso Falcoia, Alphonsus founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer—the Redemptorists—at the hermitage of Villa degli Schiavi near Caserta. The new institute was dedicated to simple preaching, catechesis, and the evangelization of the humiles, the humble and forgotten of the countryside, including the Amalfi Coast and interior villages. He later became superior of the Congregation, which received papal approval from Pope Benedict XIV in 1749.

Growth of the Congregation, evening chapels, and Redemptoristines

As the Redemptorists grew, Alphonsus developed further instruments of popular evangelization. In Naples he instituted the cappelle serotine, evening chapels that gathered large numbers of the poor for prayer, instruction, and mutual aid. He also founded the Redemptoristine nuns in Amalfi, giving contemplative expression to the same charism of redemption. A gifted musician and poet, he composed the beloved Christmas carol "Tu scendi dalle stelle." Throughout these years he collaborated closely with companions such as Gennaro Maria Sarnelli, sharing the labor of missions and the care of souls.

Prolific writer and master of moral theology

Alphonsus proved an extraordinarily prolific writer whose pen served the same pastoral ends as his preaching. He published nine editions of his Moral Theology during his lifetime, offering confessors and the faithful a balanced, compassionate approach that countered the harshness of Jansenist rigorism. Among his best-known works are The Glories of Mary, The Way of the Cross (still used in Lenten devotions), Practice of the Love of Jesus Christ, The Great Means of Prayer, and Visits to the Blessed Sacrament. His spirituality was thoroughly Christocentric and Marian; he taught that love for Jesus Christ must be the principal, indeed the only, devotion of a Christian, and he repeated the simple axiom "He who prays is saved." By rendering the heights of the spiritual life accessible in clear language, he sought to form hearts of saints even among the unlettered.

Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti

In 1762, at the age of sixty-six, Alphonsus was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti. He governed the diocese with tireless zeal for some thirteen to fifteen years, living in close pastoral proximity to his flock, reforming clergy and people, and giving an example of episcopal sanctity more by life than by words. Chronic illness finally compelled him to resign the see around 1775. He withdrew to Nocera dei Pagani, where he continued to guide his Congregation and to intercede for the poor and for the evening chapels he had founded.

Resignation, last years at Nocera, and holy death

After prolonged suffering and many sacrifices, Alphonsus died at Nocera dei Pagani on 1 August 1787. Pope Pius VI is reported to have exclaimed of him, "He was a saint!" His final thoughts remained fixed on the salvation of souls and the fruitfulness of the missions he had begun.

Beatification, canonization, and recognition as Doctor and patron

The Church swiftly recognized the holiness of his life and teaching. He was beatified on 15 September 1816 and canonized by Pope Gregory XVI on 26 May 1839. In 1871 Pope Pius IX declared him a Doctor of the Church; in 1950 Pope Pius XII named him patron of confessors and moralists. His liturgical memorial is kept on 1 August. Through the Redemptorists, his writings, and his enduring patronage, Saint Alphonsus Mary Liguori continues to call the Church to mercy in the confessional, prayer as the great means of salvation, and preferential love for the abandoned poor.
