Our Lady of Kibeho

Beginning in November 1981, students at a secondary school in Kibeho, southern Rwanda, reported visions of Mary and Jesus. The Church recognized three principal visionaries after prolonged investigation, approving the apparitions in 2001. Mary's messages emphasized prayer, conversion, and repentance, with prophetic images later linked to the Rwandan genocide. The shrine has become an important pilgrimage site for the Great Lakes region.

Izvještaj

On 28 November 1981, students at Kibeho Secondary School in the Diocese of Gikongoro, southern Rwanda, began reporting visions of Mary and, in some cases, Jesus Christ. Over the following months and years, multiple young people claimed to receive apparitions and messages. The phenomena attracted considerable attention both locally and internationally, drawing pilgrims and prompting careful ecclesiastical scrutiny.

The three visionaries formally recognized by the Church are Alphonsine Mumureke, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka, and Marie Claire Mukangango. Each reported distinct but complementary experiences of Mary's presence and messages. Other students claimed visions during the same period, but the Church's investigation focused on and ultimately approved only these three.

Mary identified herself as Mother of the Word and called for prayer of the Rosary and the Sorrowful Mysteries. She emphasized conversion of hearts, deepening of faith, and the practice of charity. The visionaries reported receiving images of suffering and devastation that many later understood as prophetic warnings related to the Rwandan genocide of 1994, which occurred about thirteen years after the apparitions began.

The messages centered on repentance, intercessory prayer, and vigilance against hatred and division. Mary urged the faithful to turn away from sin and toward reconciliation. The apparitions were presented as a call to spiritual renewal and to resistance against the forces of violence and evil that would later ravage the region.

The Bishop of Gikongoro, after extensive investigation including medical and psychological examination of the visionaries, officially approved the apparitions on 29 November 2001, nearly twenty years after they began. This approval recognized the supernatural character of the visions and the authenticity of the three principal visionaries' experiences. The diocesan approval did not extend to other claimed visionaries or later phenomena.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Kibeho has developed into a significant pilgrimage destination for Catholics throughout the Great Lakes region of Central Africa. Devotion to Our Lady of Kibeho emphasizes healing, reconciliation, and peace-building in a region marked by conflict. The shrine serves as a place of prayer and witness to Mary's maternal intercession for those suffering from violence and division.
