Our Lady of Fátima

The apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children at Fátima, Portugal (13 May–13 October 1917) rank among the most significant Marian events of the modern era. Mary's messages of prayer, penance, and devotion to her Immaculate Heart, culminating in the witnessed Miracle of the Sun, were approved by the Holy See and have profoundly shaped twentieth-century Catholic spirituality and papal teaching.

Izvještaj

From 13 May to 13 October 1917, Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, three shepherd children, reported six monthly apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the Cova da Iria near the village of Fátima in central Portugal. The children had previously spoken of angelic visitations in 1916, during which an angel taught them prayers of reparation and prepared them for Mary's coming.

During the apparitions, Mary called for daily recitation of the Rosary, acts of penance and sacrifice, and devotion to her Immaculate Heart. She spoke of the need for conversion of sinners, the reality of hell, and the connection between prayer and peace among nations. She requested the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart and promised that if her requests were heeded, Russia would be converted and an era of peace would be granted to the world.

On 13 October 1917, the final apparition day, tens of thousands of pilgrims gathered at the Cova da Iria. Witnesses reported the "Miracle of the Sun"—a phenomenon in which the sun appeared to move, spin, and descend toward the earth before returning to its normal position. This public event, observed by believers and skeptics alike, became a defining moment in the apparitions' credibility.

Francisco and Jacinta Marto died in childhood, in 1919 and 1920 respectively, and were both canonized by the Catholic Church—Jacinta in 2022 and Francisco in 2017. Lucia dos Santos entered religious life as a Carmelite nun and lived until 2005, spending decades in prayer and occasionally providing guidance on the interpretation of the apparitions' messages under Church supervision.

The Holy See formally recognized the apparitions as worthy of belief in 1930, when the Bishop of Leiria declared them authentic. Successive popes, including John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, have visited the shrine and affirmed its spiritual significance. The "three secrets" revealed during the apparitions were gradually disclosed under ecclesiastical guidance, with the final secret published by the Vatican in 2000.

The principal devotional practices associated with Fátima include daily recitation of the Rosary, the First Saturday Communion of reparation (receiving the Eucharist on the first Saturday of each month in honor of Mary's Immaculate Heart), and prayer for the Pope and for world peace. The feast of Our Lady of Fátima is celebrated on 13 May, the anniversary of the first apparition.

The shrine at Fátima has become one of the world's most visited Marian pilgrimage sites, drawing millions of devotees annually. The apparitions' emphasis on prayer, penance, and consecration to Mary's Immaculate Heart has influenced Catholic spirituality, papal encyclicals, and Church teaching on Marian devotion throughout the modern era.
