Our Lady of Ocotlán is a 16th-century Marian apparition reported in May 1541 by the indigenous convert Juan Diego Bernardino in Tlaxcala, Mexico. The visionary discovered a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary on an ocote pine tree near a healing spring. The sanctuary became a major pilgrimage site and devotional center for the newly Christianized peoples of New Spain, with papal coronation of the image affirming its spiritual significance.
In May 1541, Juan Diego Bernardino, an indigenous Christian convert of Tlaxcala in central Mexico, reported an encounter with the Virgin Mary. According to the account, Mary led him to a spring with healing waters and to an ocote pine tree, from which a perfect image of the Virgin was miraculously obtained.
