Sintesi

Notre-Dame ducap fc03

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Cape in Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada, became a prominent Marian pilgrimage site following two significant events. In March 1879, an unexpected "Ice Bridge" formed on the St. Lawrence River, allowing parishioners to transport stone for a new church. Later, in 1888, the "Miracle of the Eyes" further solidified the shrine's spiritual importance. These events underscore themes of faith, perseverance, and the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, establishing the site as a major national sanctuary with approved devotion.

Racconto

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Cape, located in Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada, traces its origins to a small parish church built in 1694. By the late 19th century, the growing congregation required a larger church, but transporting stone across the St. Lawrence River posed a significant challenge. The existing small stone church, which housed a revered statue of the Blessed Mother, was to be preserved.

In March 1879, after Father Luc Désilets, the parish priest, led prayers for divine assistance, an unusually mild winter gave way to a sudden, unexpected freeze. This formed a solid "ice bridge" across the St. Lawrence, enabling parishioners to haul the necessary building materials for the new church over a period of three days. This providential event became widely known as the "Bridge of Ice Miracle."

Nine years later, on June 22, 1888, a second profound event occurred, further cementing the shrine's spiritual significance. Father Désilets, along with Pierre Lacroix and a visiting priest, witnessed the eyes of the statue of the Blessed Mother open and remain open for several minutes. This "Miracle of the Eyes" was widely attested and deeply impacted the faithful, drawing even greater numbers of pilgrims to the shrine.

These miraculous occurrences reinforced the messages of unwavering faith, perseverance in the face of obstacles, and profound confidence in the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The shrine became a powerful symbol of Mary's maternal care for her children. Devotion at Cap-de-la-Madeleine centers on the Rosary, Marian consecration, and pilgrimages, with many seeking Mary's help and giving thanks for graces received.

The devotion at Our Lady of the Cape has received full diocesan approval, affirming the authenticity of the spiritual experiences and the validity of the shrine's mission. The site was entrusted to the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1902, who have since been instrumental in its development and promotion. In 1909, Pope Pius X granted a canonical coronation to the statue, and the shrine was elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1954, recognizing its national and international importance as a Marian sanctuary.
