Vida

Valentine of Segovia, known in Spanish as Valentín de Segovia or San Valentín and sometimes rendered Saint Velentine, is remembered in tradition as a Hispano-Visigothic hermit and martyr. He is attested as the brother of Saint Frutos of Segovia. Born about the year 700, he withdrew from the world to live as a hermit, seeking God in solitude and prayer in the region of Segovia.

In the troubled years of the early eighth century he remained faithful to Christ. Tradition records that he was beheaded, sealing his hermitic vocation with the crown of martyrdom. His memory is joined to that of his brother Saint Frutos, and he is honored among the saints of Segovia as one who preferred death to denial of the faith.

May Saint Valentine of Segovia intercede for us, and may we imitate today his steadfast fidelity in solitude and courage under trial.
