Resumen

Saint Pius X (Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto), born 2 June 1835 at Riese and elected pope in 1903, took as his motto Instaurare omnia in Christo—to restore all things in Christ. A poor postman's son who became chaplain, pastor, bishop, patriarch, and pope, he fostered frequent and early Holy Communion, Gregorian chant, catechesis, and the reform of canon law while firmly opposing Modernism. Known for personal poverty, pastoral charity, and Eucharistic piety, he died on 20 August 1914 and was canonized in 1954; he is invoked as a model pastor and pope.

Vida

Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto was born at Riese, in the Diocese of Treviso, on 2 June 1835, the second of ten children of Giovanni Battista Sarto, the village postman, and Margherita Sanson. Though the family was poor, his parents prized education. After elementary schooling he walked daily several miles to the gymnasium at Castelfranco Veneto. When his father died in 1852, the seventeen-year-old could have taken a municipal post, yet his mother labored night and day so that he might follow his vocation. He received the tonsure in 1850, won a diocesan scholarship to the seminary of Padua, and completed his classical, philosophical, and theological studies with distinction. Ordained priest on 18 September 1858 by Bishop Giovanni Antonio Farina, he was sent as chaplain to Tombolo. There he carried most of the pastoral burden for an elderly, invalid pastor, studied Saint Thomas and canon law, opened a night school for adults, and preached widely. The people already called him "Don Sarto" for his holiness.

In 1867 he became archpriest of Salzano. He restored the church, enlarged the hospital largely from his own means and begging, and showed heroic care for the sick during a cholera outbreak. He was especially zealous for the religious instruction of adults and children. In 1875 he was named canon of Treviso cathedral, spiritual director and rector of the seminary, examiner of clergy, and later vicar-general; he also secured religious instruction for public-school pupils. After Bishop Zinelli's death he served as vicar capitular. On 10 November 1884 Leo XIII appointed him Bishop of Mantua; he was consecrated on 16 November in Rome, receiving a dispensation because he held no doctorate. In Mantua he personally taught dogmatic and moral theology in the seminary, insisted on the method of Saint Thomas, distributed copies of the Summa to poorer students, promoted Gregorian chant, held a diocesan synod in 1887, and gave an example of pastoral zeal by long hours in the confessional. Returning home after consecration, his mother kissed his episcopal ring and said, "You would not have this fine ring, son, if I did not have this," showing her wedding ring.

Created cardinal on 12 June 1893 with the title San Bernardo alle Terme and preconized Patriarch of Venice, he had to wait eighteen months for the Italian government's exequatur. He took possession in 1894. In Venice he strengthened the seminary, established a faculty of canon law, held a synod, favored rural credit unions and social works, promoted sacred music and the composer Lorenzo Perosi, and opposed dangerous currents among certain Christian Democrats. Before leaving for Venice he blessed his mother for the last time; she asked for "a last blessing," sensing they would not meet again. His sisters later lived simply near Rome; he refused all favors for his family.

Leo XIII died in July 1903. In the conclave an imperial veto was attempted against Cardinal Rampolla; ballots shifted to Sarto, who was elected on 4 August 1903 and crowned on 9 August. His first great act was to abolish forever the lay veto in papal elections by the constitution Commissum nobis. He chose the motto Instaurare omnia in Christo (Eph 1:10). He urged frequent and even daily Communion, eased the Eucharistic fast for the sick, and by the decree Quam singulari (1910) lowered the age of First Communion to about seven, the age of discretion. He published the Motu proprio Tra le sollecitudini (1903) restoring Gregorian chant, issued the encyclical Acerbo nimis on catechetical instruction, and gave the Church the simple question-and-answer Catechism of Pius X for ordinary people. He condemned Modernism in the decree Lamentabili and the encyclical Pascendi (1907), required the anti-Modernist oath, founded the Pontifical Biblical Institute, began the codification of canon law, and reorganized the Roman Curia by Sapienti consilio (1908). He relaxed the Non expedit so that Italian Catholics might take a fuller part in public life, dissolved and reorganized Catholic social action in Italy, and firmly resisted the French separation laws that sought to impose associations cultuelles on the Church. After the Messina earthquake he filled the Apostolic Palace with refugees. He lived as a poor man; his will declared that he had been "born poor, lived poor, and was sure to die very poor." Tradition also records that after watching a demonstration of the tango he remarked in dialect that he preferred the furlana, yet saw no great sin in the new dance and lifted earlier ecclesiastical penalties against it.

Worn by the outbreak of the Great War and by ceaseless labor, he died on 20 August 1914. Pilgrims thronged his tomb. Pius XII beatified him in 1951 and canonized him on 29 May 1954, presenting him to the Church as a champion of faith, purity, and Eucharistic piety.

Ask Saint Pius X to obtain for you a deeper love of the Blessed Sacrament and the courage to restore all things in Christ; practice today his simplicity and pastoral charity toward the poor and the young.
