Early life and vocation in Pietrelcina
Francesco Forgione was born on 25 May 1887 in Pietrelcina in the archdiocese of Benevento to peasant farmers Grazio Forgione and Maria Giuseppa De Nunzio. Baptized the following day, he grew up in a deeply religious household that attended daily Mass and prayed the Rosary each night. From an early age he felt called to dedicate his life to God, and on 27 September 1899 he received Confirmation.
Formation and ordination
At sixteen he entered the Capuchin novitiate at Morcone on 6 January 1903, receiving the habit and the name Fra Pio. He made simple vows on 22 January 1903 and solemn profession on 27 January 1907. After studies marked by recurring illness, he was ordained priest on 10 August 1910 at Benevento.
Years in Pietrelcina and assignment to San Giovanni Rotondo
Because of frail health he remained with his family in Pietrelcina from 1910 until September 1916. In that month he was assigned to the Capuchin convent of San Giovanni Rotondo, where he would reside for the rest of his life.
Apostolic life: Mass, confession, and counsel
At San Giovanni Rotondo Padre Pio centered his days on the celebration of the Eucharist, which he regarded as the summit of his apostolic work. He spent long hours in the confessional reconciling penitents and offered spiritual direction to the many faithful who sought him, describing prayer as the key that opens the heart of God and passing entire days and much of the night in colloquy with the Lord.
Charitable works and the hospital foundation
Moved by charity toward the poor and suffering, whom he saw as the image of Christ, he labored to relieve the hardships of local families. On 5 May 1956 he inaugurated the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza hospital, a work he founded expressly to alleviate the pain of the sick and their loved ones.
Virtues under trial and final years
Throughout his life he embraced the Cross with humility, accepting Vatican investigations, temporary restrictions on his ministry, and calumnies in silence while trusting in God's judgment. He observed the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience with supernatural intention, practiced generous mortification, and remained detached from honors, repeating that he wished only to be a poor friar who prays.
Death and immediate legacy
His health, never robust, declined sharply in later years. He died peacefully on 23 September 1968 at the age of eighty-one in San Giovanni Rotondo. His funeral drew an extraordinary multitude of the faithful, and devotion to him has continued to spread throughout the world.
