Resumen

Blessed Maria Vicenta Masia Ferragut (1882–1936) was a Spanish Poor Clare who, with her mother and three religious sisters, gave her life for the Catholic faith during the persecution of the Spanish Civil War. Born into a large Christian family, she embraced the cloistered Franciscan life and remained steadfast when arrested for her consecration to Christ. Beatified by Pope John Paul II on 11 March 2001 among José Aparicio Sanz and 232 companions, she stands as a witness of fidelity, family holiness, and martyrdom.

Vida

Maria Vicenta Masia Ferragut was born on 12 January 1882 in Spain, into a large and deeply Christian family. Her parents were Maria Teresa Ferragut Roig and Vicente Silverio Masia. From this home of faith four daughters would later enter religious life, and their mother herself would share their final confession of Christ.

Drawn to the evangelical poverty and enclosure of Saint Clare, Maria Vicenta became a Poor Clare nun, as did three of her sisters. In the quiet of the cloister she sought to love God through prayer, penance, and the common life of the Franciscan family.

When the religious persecution of the Spanish Civil War broke upon the Church, she was arrested together with her mother and her sisters. Refusing to renounce their faith or their consecration, they were put to death for Christ. Maria Vicenta suffered martyrdom on 25 October 1936.

On 11 March 2001 Pope John Paul II beatified her in the great company of José Aparicio Sanz and 232 companions, martyrs of the faith in Spain. The Church thus honors this family of Poor Clares and their mother as witnesses who preferred death to denial of the Gospel.

May Blessed Maria Vicenta obtain for us the grace of steadfast fidelity, and let us imitate today her courage in holding fast to Christ even unto death.
