Resumen

Saints Lucianus and Marcianus (also Lucian and Marcian) were Christian martyrs of Nicomedia who suffered under the proconsul Sabinus in the Decian persecution and died about 255. Once practitioners of magic, they were converted by a virgin and sealed their faith by fire on 26 October. They are patrons of the city and diocese of Vic, of converts, and of those oppressed by evil powers or spells. Their steadfast turn from darkness to Christ invites imitation of conversion and courage.

Lucianus and Marcianus are remembered as a pair of Christian martyrs who suffered at Nicomedia during the persecution of Decius under the proconsul Sabinus. Their names appear on 26 October in ancient manuscripts of the Hieronymian Martyrology together with those of Heraclides, Florus, Titus, and another Florus. Though omitted by Bede and Usuard, Lucianus, Marcianus, and Florus are named in the martyrology of Florus, who records that they were burned at the stake in the time of the proconsul Sabinus. Cesare Baronius later entered Lucianus and Marcianus in the Roman Martyrology.

The circumstances of their martyrdom are preserved in a Latin passio derived from a lost Greek original (published at Amsterdam in 1713) and in a Syriac passio (published at Rome in 1748). According to both accounts, the two men had been magicians. They were converted to Christianity through the witness of a virgin. For confessing the faith they were condemned to the stake by Sabinus and put to death on 26 October, during the Decian persecutions (about 250–255).

Their cult took firm root in Catalonia. They are patrons of the city and diocese of Vic, where they are honored as local martyrs and where their relics are preserved; the relics were discovered in 1050, an invention still commemorated on 1 April. The Roman Martyrology continues to praise them on 26 October.

May Saints Lucianus and Marcianus intercede for us, that we may imitate their decisive conversion and remain faithful under every trial.
