Resumen

Blessed Benigna Cardoso da Silva (1928–1941) was a Brazilian orphan and devout Catholic child who died a martyr at thirteen while defending her chastity against violent assault. Raised in faith by adoptive aunts near Santana do Cariri, she loved Mass, parish life, and pure belonging to Christ. Beatified in 2022 as a martyr in defensum castitatis, she is remembered as a heroine of purity whose blood sealed her fidelity. Her feast is 24 October.

Vida

Benigna Cardoso da Silva was born on 15 October 1928 at Sítio Oiti, near Santana do Cariri in Ceará, Brazil, the youngest of four children of José Cardoso da Silva and Teresa Maria da Silva. She never knew her father, who died before her birth, and lost her mother when she was barely one year old. Together with her siblings Carmélia, Alderi, and Cirineu, she was adopted by the sisters Rosa and Honorina Sisnando Leite, owners of the farm where her parents had worked. The aunts saw that she attended school and church. Benigna grew into a modest, reserved, and faithful student who took part in Holy Mass and the life of the parish of Santana, while gladly doing household work to help the elderly ladies who had taken her in. She longed for First Communion, became assiduous at Mass, practiced simple penances, and kept the devotion of the First Fridays in honor of the Sacred Heart. Her parish priest, Father Cristiano Coelho Rodrigues, noticed her fervor and encouraged her.

From about 1940 a youth of roughly her own age, Raimundo Alves Ribeiro (known as Raul), began to harass her with unwanted advances. Benigna, who judged herself too young for any such relationship and wished to keep her virginity for Jesus, firmly refused him. She sought the guidance of her confessor, who urged her to resist with fortitude and perseverance in virtue, advised her to keep the boy at a distance, and gave her an illustrated book of biblical stories (or a Bible). The young man only pressed more insistently and with growing violence.

On the afternoon of 24 October 1941, only a week after she turned thirteen, knowing that Benigna would go to draw water at a well outside the village, he hid in the vegetation and sprang upon her. Under the pretext of helping her he attempted to violate her. She resisted with remarkable strength and tried to flee. Enraged, he seized a machete he had brought and struck her four times: the first blow severed three fingers of her right hand as she raised it in defense; the second struck her forehead; the third her kidneys or stomach; the fourth and fatal blow nearly cut her throat. Realizing what he had done, the murderer fled. Her brother Cirineu, who had gone looking for her, found her body. She was buried the next morning in the public cemetery. The killer was later captured and imprisoned. Fifty years afterward he returned to the scene of the crime, by then a place of pilgrimage, and expressed his repentance.

From the first, Father Rodrigues called her a "heroine of chastity." Pilgrims came to her grave. Her remains were later transferred to the parish church of Santana do Cariri. The Church recognized that she had died in defense of her chastity; Pope Francis approved the decree of martyrdom on 2 October 2019, and she was beatified on 24 October 2022 at Crato. The words of the psalm that open the decree on her martyrdom—"How can a young person keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word" (Ps 119:9)—were fulfilled in her brief life: she kept in her heart the desire to belong to Christ and sealed that belonging with her blood.

May Blessed Benigna obtain for us the grace of holy purity and the courage to defend it, and may we imitate today her steadfast fidelity to Christ.
