  • According to tradition preserved in the Historia pontificum et comitum Engolismensium, while serving as chaplain at the court of Clovis I, Aptonio performed a miraculous intervention that aided the king and was rewarded with the bishopric of Angoulême.

Saint Aptonio, bishop of Angoulême, lived in the middle of the sixth century and is honored by the Church as a confessor and shepherd of souls. The oldest episcopal catalogue of Angoulême, dating from the tenth century, places him as the third bishop of the see, after the protovescovo Ausonius and an anonymous predecessor whose name was later erased from the parchment. Historical records also attest two other bishops, Dynamius and Lupicinus, between Ausonius and Aptonio.

His episcopate began between 541 and 542. On 14 May 541 his predecessor Lupicinus was still alive and was represented at the Council of Orléans by the priest Chierius, perhaps because of age or illness. According to the contemporary Life of Saint Eparchius, the hermit was received by the bishop of Angoulême in 542, by which time Aptonio had already succeeded Lupicinus. Aptonio himself took part in the Council of Orléans on 28 October 549 and is again mentioned in the Life of Saint Eparchius in the year 558.

Later medieval narratives of lesser historical weight surround his memory with legend. The Historia pontificum et comitum Engolismensium relates that Aptonio had been a chaplain at the court of Clovis I and that a miraculous intervention on behalf of the king won him the bishopric of Angoulême as a reward. A legendary twelfth-century Life, filled with anachronisms, presents Ausonius and Aptonio as twin brothers born near Saintes, baptized by Saint Martial of Limoges, and later charged by him with the evangelization of the Angoulême region; after Ausonius was slain by Vandals, Aptonio succeeded him. These traditions led some earlier compilers to insert additional bishops named Aptonio into the list, yet the securely attested figure remains the mid-sixth-century pastor who governed the diocese and welcomed the holy hermit Eparchius.

The reformed Roman Martyrology commemorates this holy bishop on 26 October. Through his quiet fidelity to the councils of the Church and his care for the spiritual life of his people, Aptonio stands as a model of episcopal service.

May Saint Aptonio intercede for us, that we may practice today the virtue of steadfast pastoral charity toward those entrusted to our care.
