The Didache (“Teaching of the Twelve Apostles”) is among the earliest Christian writings outside the New Testament — a short handbook of moral teaching, baptism, fasting, prayer, the Eucharist, and local church order. Most scholars date it to the late first or early second century (often c. 70–100), likely in Syria or Palestine.

The Church has never received the Didache as Sacred Scripture. It stands with the Apostolic Fathers and early “church orders”: historically precious and useful as a window on primitive practice, but not canonical. Catholics may read it with profit as ancient catechesis, while measuring it against Scripture and the later defined faith of the Church.

Its opening “Two Ways” (of life and of death) echoes Jewish moral tradition and the Gospel’s ethical demand. It gives early directions for baptism (preferably in living water; trinitarian formula), Wednesday and Friday fasting, the Lord’s Prayer thrice daily, and thanksgiving prayers over the cup and broken bread — among the oldest extant Eucharistic texts. It also speaks of itinerant prophets, Sunday assembly, and appointing bishops and deacons.

A later compilation, the Apostolic Constitutions (roughly 3rd–4th c.), reuses some of this tradition — especially in Book VII. That work is catalogued separately; it is not the Didache.

Fragments and notices of real second- and third-century Christian writers (e.g. Melito, Hegesippus, Dionysius of Corinth) gathered in Schaff’s ANF. Generally safe historical reading — pieces of authentic early Christian witness, not a dump of gospel apocrypha.

Early Syriac Christian documents — teachings attributed to Addai, martyr acts, and related Edessene materials. Valuable for the history of the Syriac churches; mix of tradition and legend. Not New Testament apocrypha in the usual sense, but not Magisterial teaching either.

The Apostolic Constitutions are a later church-order compilation (roughly 3rd–4th century), in eight books plus a set of “apostolic” canons. They gather and expand earlier disciplinary and liturgical traditions. Titles credit the apostles; the form we have is not apostolic in the same sense as the New Testament, and the Church does not receive them as Scripture or as a freestanding rule of faith.

Read them as historical documents of developing Eastern church order: household morals, the duties of clergy and laity, initiation, the Eucharist, feasts, and canons. Book VII incorporates and recasts material related to the Didache — the short first-century handbook kept here as its own booklet. The two are not the same work.

Catholics may use this dossier for history and comparison, measuring it against Scripture and the later defined faith of the Church.

Ancient Eastern eucharistic liturgies from Schaff’s Ante-Nicene Fathers (vol. 7)—historical church rites of Jerusalem, Alexandria, and the Syriac East, not New Testament apocrypha. Titles credit apostles; the forms we have are later developments (often 4th–5th c.) with older cores. Not the Roman Missal; related rites still live in Eastern Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Memoirs and notices concerning Edessa and the conversion tradition of King Abgar and the apostle Addai. Important for Syriac Christian memory; includes legendary elements. Historical dossier, not canonical Scripture.

The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs — Old Testament pseudepigrapha (speeches put in the mouths of Jacob’s sons), preserved and adapted in Christian transmission. Not Scripture; not a source of Catholic dogma. Read as ancient Jewish–Christian literature, with care.

Texts connected with the Gospel tradition in ANF vol. 10 — notably the apocryphal Gospel of Peter (rejected as non-canonical) and Tatian’s Diatessaron (an early harmony of the four Gospels). The Gospel of Peter is not Scripture; the Diatessaron is a historical harmony, not a fifth gospel. Read with clear labels: apocryphon vs. scholarly harmony.

New Testament apocrypha from the ANF corpus — acts, revelations, and legends attributed to apostles (Thomas, Paul, John, and others). These are not canonical Scripture. The Church does not receive them as inspired; they are useful only as evidence of early popular piety and heterodox or legendary storytelling. Do not treat them as Gospel or dogma.

Apocryphal apocalypses and visionary romances (Peter, Paul, the Virgin, Sedrach, and related texts). Not the canonical Book of Revelation. The Church does not receive these as inspired Scripture; they often mix piety with legend. Historical curiosity, not a rule of faith.

Pseudo-Clementine literature (Recognitions and related Homilies) circulated under the name of Clement of Rome but is not by him. Legend, romance, and uneven theology — including strands the Church does not receive as authentic apostolic teaching. Historical interest only; not Scripture and not a safe guide to doctrine.

Early “decretals” and papal letters as printed in the ANF — a dossier that includes forged or unreliable material later sorted out by critical history (related to the wider problem of false decretals). Not authentic Magisterium. Useful only to see what circulated under papal names; do not cite as living Church law or doctrine.
