Our Lady of Coromoto

On 8 September 1652, near the Guanare River in present-day Portuguesa State, Venezuela, the Cospe chief Coromoto reported an apparition of the Virgin Mary calling his people to baptism. A small painted image, preserved on a parchment-like fragment, became the enduring focus of national devotion. Our Lady of Coromoto was declared principal patroness of Venezuela, and her shrine at Guanare remains the country's foremost Marian pilgrimage site.

Dates and place. The apparition is traditionally dated to 8 September 1652 near the Guanare River in what is now Portuguesa State, in the western llanos region of Venezuela. At the time, the area was a mission frontier where Spanish evangelization was reaching the Cospe (or Coromoto) indigenous people, who had withdrawn into the forests to avoid contact with colonists.

The visionary. Tradition identifies the principal witness as the chief of the Cospe people, known by the name Coromoto. He is described as initially reluctant to accept baptism and Christian instruction, though accounts note that his wife and other members of his community were present at moments connected with the events.

The story. According to the received account, the Virgin Mary appeared to the chief by a stream, urging him and his people to go to the missionaries and receive baptism. When Coromoto resisted a later appearance, a small image of the Virgin holding the Child was left on a tiny parchment-like fragment. This image, only a few centimeters in size, was preserved and became the central relic of the devotion.

Messages and devotion. The core message is a call to conversion, baptism, and incorporation into the Church, addressed through an indigenous leader to his people. Devotion spread from Guanare across the llanos and eventually throughout Venezuela, taking deep root in popular piety, family life, and national Catholic identity.

Patronage and feast. Pope Pius XII declared Our Lady of Coromoto principal patroness of Venezuela in 1944, and the tiny image was solemnly crowned. Her liturgical feast is observed on 11 September, with major celebrations also around 8 September, the anniversary of the apparition.

Shrine. The National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Coromoto, consecrated in 1996 near Guanare on the traditional site of the apparition, houses the venerated image. Saint John Paul II visited the shrine in 1996 and prayed before the relic, reinforcing its standing as the foremost Marian pilgrimage center in Venezuela.

Ecclesial status. The devotion is fully approved and enjoys the highest ecclesiastical recognition as an expression of authentic Marian piety, confirmed by the papal declaration of patronage and canonical coronation. While the seventeenth-century narrative belongs to colonial hagiographic tradition rather than modern canonical investigation, the cult itself is firmly established and encouraged by the Venezuelan Church.
