On 21 August 1879, about fifteen witnesses in Knock, County Mayo, Ireland, reported a silent apparition of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Saint John the Evangelist beside the parish church. Unique among major Marian sites, the vision also showed an altar with the Lamb of God and a cross—Christ present eucharistically amid the saints—while angels adored. No words were spoken. The shrine was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1979 and remains a center of Marian and eucharistic devotion in Ireland.
Relato
On the evening of 21 August 1879, in the village of Knock (Cnoc Mhuire) in County Mayo, Ireland, parishioners witnessed an apparition on the gable wall of the parish church. The vision lasted approximately two hours and occurred in steady rain, yet witnesses reported seeing clearly.
The witnesses—men, women, and children—described seeing the Virgin Mary crowned and clothed in white, with Saint Joseph standing to her right. Saint John the Evangelist appeared vested as a bishop, holding a book. Behind them stood an altar bearing a Lamb and a cross. The apparition was entirely silent; no words or messages were spoken.

A Church commission examined the witnesses and found their accounts consistent and credible. Popular pilgrimage to the site began immediately and has continued without interruption for over a century. The shrine was formally approved for devotion by the Diocese of Tuam.
Pope John Paul II visited Knock in 1979, on the centenary of the apparition, affirming its spiritual significance. Subsequent popes have also recognized the shrine's importance to Irish Catholic life. Knock remains one of Europe's major Marian pilgrimage destinations.

The silence of the apparition itself carries profound meaning in devotional tradition: the presence of Mary with the Lamb of God—symbol of the Eucharist—and the communion of saints, offered as consolation to Ireland during a period of hardship and emigration.
Devotion at Knock centers on the recitation of the Rosary, participation in Mass, and the sacrament of anointing of the sick. Pilgrims seek healing, intercession, and spiritual renewal through Mary's maternal presence. The feast day is celebrated on 21 August.
The Knock Shrine basilica, built to accommodate pilgrims, stands near the original apparition site. The shrine maintains a tradition of welcoming the sick and suffering, reflecting the compassionate character attributed to the apparition itself.
