Benoîte Rencurel (1664–1718) was a shepherdess living in the remote Hautes-Alpes region of southeastern France. Beginning in 1664, while tending her flocks near the hamlet of Saint-Étienne-le-Laus, she reported experiencing apparitions of the Virgin Mary that would continue throughout her life.
According to accounts of the apparitions, Mary appeared to Benoîte with a mission centered on spiritual healing and reconciliation. The Virgin requested that a church be built at the site and asked for oil from the sanctuary lamp to be used for the sick and suffering who came seeking aid.
Word of the apparitions and reported graces spread throughout the region. Pilgrims began traveling to Saint-Étienne-le-Laus, and priests heard confessions from large numbers of penitents seeking conversion and spiritual renewal. The shrine became known as a place of profound reconciliation.
Benoîte's messages emphasized the importance of frequent confession, genuine conversion of heart, and trust in Mary's maternal intercession. She taught that the shrine was a refuge for sinners and that Mary welcomed all who came with sincere repentance.
For more than three centuries after Benoîte's death in 1718, the shrine remained a site of popular devotion in the French Alps. The local Church maintained careful oversight of the claims and the spiritual fruits associated with the apparitions.
In 2008, after extensive historical and theological examination, the Bishop of Gap formally recognized the supernatural character of the apparitions and events at Laus. This diocesan approval affirmed the authenticity of Benoîte's spiritual experiences and the legitimacy of pilgrimage to the shrine.
Today, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Laus continues to draw pilgrims seeking reconciliation, healing, and spiritual conversion. The shrine remains a living testimony to Mary's maternal care and her call to sinners to return to God through the sacrament of penance.
