Resumen

Our Lady of Chiquinquira

On 26 December 1586, in Chiquinquirá, Boyacá, Colombia, a faded canvas of Our Lady of the Rosary was reported suddenly restored to vivid color and clarity before multiple witnesses. The event sparked immediate pilgrimage and devotion; the image became venerated as patroness of Colombia. A large basilica now houses the canvas, and papal visits and coronations have honored the shrine.

Relato

In December 1586, the town of Chiquinquirá in the department of Boyacá, in what was then the Spanish colonial territory of New Granada (now Colombia), became the site of a reported miraculous event. A canvas depicting Our Lady of the Rosary, which had hung in the local chapel and had become darkened and worn with age, was said to have been suddenly restored to brilliant color and clarity.

The restoration occurred before witnesses and was attributed to intercessory prayer. The event was not associated with an individual visionary receiving messages, but rather with the sudden transformation of the sacred image itself. Local faithful immediately recognized the event as a sign of divine favor and began gathering in pilgrimage to venerate the restored painting.

Basilica virgen chiquinquira

News of the miraculous restoration spread rapidly throughout the region and beyond. The devotion grew so substantially that Chiquinquirá became one of the principal Marian shrines in Colombia. The canvas was eventually enshrined in a large basilica constructed to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims who came to pray before the image.

The principal focus of devotion at Chiquinquirá centers on the Rosary, Marian intercession, and the renewal of faith. Pilgrims have sought the Virgin's protection and maternal care, particularly for the spiritual welfare of the Colombian nation. The shrine has become deeply woven into the religious and cultural identity of Colombia.

The image was canonically crowned in recognition of its significance to the faith of the Colombian people. Several popes have visited the shrine and affirmed its importance to Catholic devotion. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá is celebrated on 9 July.

The apparition and miraculous restoration have been recognized by diocesan authority as worthy of devotion. The shrine remains an active center of pilgrimage and prayer, drawing faithful from throughout Colombia and beyond who seek the intercession of Mary through this venerated image.
