Our Lady of China

Our Lady of Donglu is a revered Marian shrine in Hebei, China, where villagers in 1900 credited the Virgin Mary with miraculous protection during the Boxer Uprising. This event fostered deep devotion, leading to the establishment of a shrine and the association of Our Lady of China—an image of Mary and the Child in traditional Chinese dress—with the site. Despite political challenges and suppression, Donglu remains a powerful symbol of faith, protection, and fidelity for Chinese Catholics, drawing pilgrims who seek Mary's intercession as Mother of China.

Relato

Donglu, a village near Baoding in Hebei province, China, became a significant site of Marian devotion during the Boxer Uprising in 1900. During this period of intense anti-foreign and anti-Christian persecution, the predominantly Catholic community of Donglu found itself under siege by rebel forces and imperial troops.

According to numerous accounts from the villagers, a "beautiful lady in white" or a "heavenly lady" appeared in the sky above the village, repelling the attackers and saving the community from certain destruction. This miraculous intervention was widely attributed to the Blessed Virgin Mary, intensifying local devotion. An image depicting Mary and the Child Jesus in traditional Chinese imperial robes, known as Our Lady of China, became closely associated with Donglu.

The First National Synod of the Catholic Church in China, held in Shanghai in 1924, further solidified this devotion when Archbishop Celso Costantini, the Apostolic Delegate, consecrated China to the Blessed Mother and commissioned a national image of Our Lady of China. A shrine dedicated to Our Lady of China was eventually built at Donglu in 1932, becoming a major pilgrimage destination that drew vast numbers of the faithful, especially in May.

The principal messages associated with Donglu revolve around divine protection of the faithful, unwavering fidelity under persecution, and Mary's role as the compassionate Mother of China. The shrine has served as a powerful symbol of resilience and hope for Chinese Catholics throughout various periods of trial and suppression, underscoring a deep cultural integration of faith.

The local ordinary, Bishop Francis Ge Zongzhe of Baoding, approved the devotion to Our Lady of Donglu. Throughout its history, the shrine's operational status has been heavily influenced by political conditions, experiencing periods of both flourishing pilgrimage and severe government suppression. Despite these challenges, Donglu remains enshrined in the memory and hearts of Chinese Catholics as one of the country's most significant Marian pilgrimage sites.
