Resumen

Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida 2019 21

In October 1717, fishermen in Brazil's Paraíba do Sul River discovered a small, darkened clay image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. After finding the two parts, their nets miraculously filled, sparking devotion. Numerous reported miracles led to widespread veneration, culminating in the construction of the vast National Shrine. Officially approved by the Church, Our Lady of Aparecida was proclaimed Principal Patroness of Brazil by Pope Pius XI in 1930, becoming a powerful symbol of faith and hope for the nation.

Relato

In October 1717, three fishermen, João Alves, Filipe Pedroso, and Domingos Garcia, were tasked with catching fish for a banquet honoring the Count of Assumar, governor of São Paulo, who was passing through Guaratinguetá. They cast their nets in the Paraíba do Sul River, near Porto Itaguaçu, in the captaincy of São Paulo, Brazil.

Despite their efforts, they caught very little until they retrieved the body of a small, broken clay statue of the Virgin Mary. Upon casting their nets again, they found the head of the same statue. After reassembling the image, their nets were suddenly filled with an abundance of fish, far exceeding their previous meager catch.

The fishermen kept the dark-colored image, which had been stained by river mud and candle smoke over time, in Filipe Pedroso's home. Soon, a small oratory was built for public veneration, and as reports of favors and miracles multiplied, devotion quickly spread among the local populace.

A larger chapel was constructed on a hill overlooking the river in 1734 to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims. This was eventually replaced by an even larger church in 1888. The monumental Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, consecrated in 1980, now stands as one of the largest Marian shrines globally.

The devotion to Our Lady of Aparecida emphasizes Mary's maternal care for all Brazilians, particularly the poor and marginalized, reflecting the humble origins of her discovery. Her feast day is celebrated annually on October 12th, a national holiday in Brazil, where she is revered as the spiritual mother and protector of the nation.

The veneration of Our Lady of Aparecida received early ecclesiastical approval, with Pope Pius IX granting permission for public veneration of the image in 1868. The image was solemnly crowned in 1904 by Archbishop José Camargo Barros. In 1930, Pope Pius XI officially declared Our Lady of Aparecida the Principal Patroness of Brazil.

The original chapel was elevated to a Minor Basilica in 1908. The new basilica was consecrated by Pope John Paul II during his visit in 1980, a significant moment for the shrine. Subsequent papal visits by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007 and Pope Francis in 2013 further underscored the shrine's importance and the deep devotion of the Brazilian people.
