Secretos — Our Lady of Medjugorje

On 19 September 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, with the assent of Pope Francis, published the Note “The Queen of Peace” on the spiritual experience connected with Medjugorje. It authorizes a nihil obstat for that spiritual experience: the faithful may adhere to it prudently; public acts of devotion are permitted; abundant positive fruits are recognized. This is not a declaration that the apparitions are supernatural.

The Note states that a positive assessment of most of the messages does not imply that they have a direct supernatural origin. The faithful are not obliged to believe in the phenomena. The special Apostolic Visitor is to authorize future messages—and past unpublished texts—before publication.

Therefore SanctumNomen does not invent or “fill in” secret contents. What follows is only the publicly alleged framework: that ten secrets were promised; that their full texts remain undisclosed; and that certain general claims (warnings, a lasting sign, later chastisements) have been attributed to the visionaries in interviews and early reports—not confirmed by the Holy See as revealed truth.

Number. The visionaries say there are ten secrets, some shared and some differing among them. Public reports over the years have stated that Mirjana, Ivanka, and Jakov have received all ten (and no longer claim daily apparitions), while Marija, Vicka, and Ivan have been described as having nine—figures that can change in secondary reports and are not Church-verified.

Disclosure process (Mirjana’s account). Mirjana has said she will give a parchment containing the secrets to a priest of her choice (she has named Fr. Petar Ljubičić). According to that account, the priest prays and fasts, then announces each secret a few days before the corresponding event. Exact day-counts vary slightly in retellings; the consistent claim is advance public announcement before each event—and that this has not yet begun.

Permanent sign. Multiple visionaries have said one secret concerns a lasting, beautiful, indestructible sign on Apparition Hill (Podbrdo), given especially so that unbelievers may believe. They stress that the time before any such sign is a time of grace for conversion, and that one should not wait for the sign to convert.

Warnings and chastisements. In the early summary attributed to Mirjana via Fr. Vlašić (November 1983), three warnings (events on earth) were said to precede the visible sign; the ninth and tenth secrets were described as serious chastisements that can be mitigated but not eliminated by prayer and penance; and the seventh was said to have been lessened through prayer and fasting. These remain unverified private claims. SanctumNomen does not treat them as certain prophecy.

The actual wording of all ten secrets has never been published by the visionaries, the parish, or the Holy See. Dates and places allegedly written on Mirjana’s parchment are not public. No secret has yet been announced to the world through the process she describes.

Under the 2024 DDF Note, past unpublished texts and future messages require discernment and authorization by the Apostolic Visitor before publication. Curiosity about hidden calamities is not the heart of Christian life; the public spiritual proposal of Medjugorje, as the Church presents it for devotion, centers on peace, conversion, prayer, fasting, and the Eucharist.
