Summary

Our Lady of Luján

Our Lady of Luján is the patroness of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, revered through a miraculous event in 1630 when a small terracotta image of the Immaculate Conception, en route from Brazil, became immovably fixed in Luján. This unexpected sign led to the establishment of a profound national Marian devotion, centered on the image's enduring presence and the subsequent construction of a grand basilica, symbolizing Mary's protective gaze over the South American nations.

Account

The devotion to Our Lady of Luján began in May 1630, when a caravan transporting two Marian images from Brazil to Santiago del Estero, commissioned by Don Antonio Farías de Sáa, stopped for the night near the Luján River in what is now Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. One of the images, a small terracotta figure of the Immaculate Conception, about 38 centimeters tall, was the focus of an extraordinary occurrence.

According to tradition, the ox-cart carrying the images became inexplicably stuck the following morning and could not be moved despite all efforts. After attempts to lighten the load failed, it was discovered that only when the smaller image of the Virgin Mary was removed from the cart could the oxen proceed. This event was interpreted as a divine sign that the image wished to remain in that place.

Initially, the image was entrusted to Don Rosendo, a local landowner, who built a small hermitage for its veneration. Later, it was moved to the home of Manuel, the ox-cart driver, and subsequently to a more permanent chapel. Over centuries, the site grew into a significant pilgrimage destination, culminating in the construction of the impressive Neo-Gothic Basilica of Our Lady of Luján, which began in 1890.

While there are no specific verbal messages associated with Our Lady of Luján, the "message" is embodied in the miraculous event itself and the image's enduring presence, signifying Mary's desire to be present among her people. The devotion emphasizes her role as a protector and intercessor, fostering a deep sense of national identity and faith.

Our Lady of Luján was officially declared the patroness of Argentina in 1930, and also holds patronage over Uruguay and Paraguay. The image was granted a pontifical coronation in 1887, and the shrine has been visited by several popes, including Pope John Paul II in 1982. Her feast day is celebrated annually on May 8th, drawing millions of pilgrims to her sanctuary.

The devotion to Our Lady of Luján has received long-standing ecclesiastical approval, recognized as a legitimate and profound expression of faith within the Catholic Church. The shrine is a National Sanctuary under the authority of the Archdiocese of Mercedes-Luján, affirming its significant spiritual and cultural importance.
